Art for Interiors or Interiors for Art?

"Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love"      Nate Berkus

We love colourful art!

Art can elevate your interior scheme, inject personality and bring together all the decorative elements of your space, creating a home you will love to be in. The artwork you choose reflects your personal taste, and understanding your personal taste, along with a liberal sprinkling of colour consultancy, are two of the most important building blocks of any interior design project.

Featured Artists

All the artists featured here are some of our personal favourites based in Bristol and the southwest. There are far too many for us to feature them all, so we’ve had to make some difficult choices…

Art or Interior Décor First?

You might wonder whether it’s better to base your interior décor around your artwork, or to choose colours and styles you love for your interior design and then seek to find art to blend with the scheme.

We can confirm that, from an interior design perspective we can design for both options but you may find it easier to choose your artwork first.

In the mood board above we showcased a client's existing artwork and designed the room specifically to complement Derek Gores unique work.

Artwork should never be an afterthought. Used well, art is one of the most transformative design tools to add to your interior style and can elevate any room. Trying to source art that really inspires you and fits with an existing home interior colour palette and style can be tricky, and you might end up making a costly mistake or compromising in a way you’d rather avoid.

So, if you’re the proud owner of artwork that really resonates with you, and whose style and colours you adore, why not design your home interior scheme to blend with and/or showcase it?

Designing in this way will result in your interior having a unique look and feel that reflects both the personality of the artist and also your own personality.

Have fun with it and paint the walls or select furniture that will draw out and mirror colours in the art. You could arrange your furniture in a way that maximises the impact of your art and allows it to act as the framework for your room.

And always make sure that your artwork fits the style of your home and the interior finish you are aiming to achieve.

Art is such an important aspect of interior design, we could write ad infinitum about how each piece might influence your interior design choices. If you do have a beloved piece of art and would like to use it to inspire your interior design, one of our Inspire Sessions would be a great first step, as this is one of our specialities.

During our Inspire Sessions, we will visit your home and spend time listening to what you hope to achieve with your full or part-home refresh, and we’ll offer practical ideas and easy design and home styling tips.

I think we’ve all had enough rain (and muddy dog walks, for those of us with pooch pals) for now, so I hope that the next newsletter is delivered along with some dryer, warmer days. In the meantime, why not spend a rainy afternoon or two visiting one of the many local art galleries and thinking about the artwork you are drawn to, with a view to using art as inspiration for your home interiors?
