6 Reasons to hire an interior designer

6 reasons why hiring an interior designer will be the best decision you make

So you’re ready to create the home of your dreams? A fusion of your favourite colours and styles, and a carefully curated showcase for favourite items and treasured memories you’ve collected throughout the years.

You’re imagining a haven, a place you come home to and instantly feel lighter. A space that feels truly you. Somewhere you can’t wait to share with friends and entertain’!

But where to start? Is this something you can achieve on your own?

If you’re in two minds about whether you’d benefit from working with an interior designer, here are just a few of the reasons you should consider making the investment:

1, You’re nervous it might not turn out quite the way you hope

Often, I find that it’s not that my clients are unable to see what works and what doesn’t when it comes to interiors, it’s that they’re too scared to go for it. They don’t have the confidence to make those ‘brave’ decisions. Opting instead to play it safe by painting the walls white, choosing one accent colour and selecting a few coordinated accessories from a high street shop.

Of course, that’s fine. But working with an interior designer would allow you to create a room that’s so much more.

If you yearn for a home that truly expresses your personality, filled with colours, patterns and prints you love - but never would have imagined you would love - an expert guiding hand is what you need. Along with a friendly hand to hold as you step outside your comfort zone.

2, You want a polished, professional finish

Obviously home renovation is one of those things that everyone is capable of doing themselves. Just like everyone could sew all their own clothes, service their own cars, or cut their own hair. Most of us choose not to however, because we just know that someone who has had years of practise and experience will be able to do it better and far more efficiently.

And the same is true for interior design.

By investing in an interior designer to look after your project, you’ll guarantee the finished result will exceed expectations. With little pockets of perfection that you’ll keep noticing as the seasonal light changes, or as you move through rooms in different ways. Because, as interior designers, we’re trained to think about our designs from different perspectives, adding delightful depth and surprising layers that truly bring the finished result to life.

You’ll also enjoy a few professional finishing touches and styling at the end to really give that ‘high gloss’, magazine-ready finish.

3, You want to create something you’ll love for a long time

While it may be tempting to browse the glossy home mags and incorporate all of the latest trends in your room design, I wouldn’t advise it. Fashions change, colour preferences evolve – hello Pantone colour for 2025, Mocha Mousse - and if you’re not careful you’ll be left with an outdated room in not-so-many years to come. It’s a fine line that a professional interior designer will be able to help you navigate, ensuring you can include a few trend-led pieces, but tying them into a classic scheme that will stand the test of time.

This approach will also mean your space can be updated as and when you wish, without having to commit to a full room overhaul.

4, You’re worried about making costly mistakes

Interior design mistakes can be expensive. Whether it’s choosing the wrong paint colour and slapping it on the wall before you realise, or picking out an expensive sofa that just doesn’t work with the rest of the room. I often find one mistake can lead to another as you try to put things right – and ultimately can end in a room that cost a fortune and just isn’t what you set out to achieve.

And that’s without even considering the amount of time and effort you’ve spent on getting to that point.

When you hire an interior designer, you’ll be far less likely to make such costly errors. Not only will you have an expert on hand who knows what will work and what won’t, you’ll have someone to bounce your ideas off to make sure they’re in keeping with the finished result you’re looking for.

Sometimes the best way to stress less is to simply hand the problem over to someone else.

5, You need something that stands up to real life

A classic mistake that DIY home renovators make, is to get carried away in the ‘beauty’ of what they’re trying to create, rather than considering the fact it needs to be lived in. That’s why one of the first steps in my process is to spend time with you in your home and understand how you live. And the things you do and don’t like about your current living arrangements. We might discuss storage, or the need for flooring that can hold its own against 3 football-mad boys and a dog. Or you might have the need for a practical office space hidden in the corner of a dining room.

Whatever we do with the room, however stunning it looks, it’s no good if you can’t live in it, or with it, the way you need to. And an interior designer who’s seen it all before will be the best placed person to solve any practical problems and create design solutions making sure your room is a functional, as well as a beautiful, space.

6, You’re feeling overwhelmed with all the options available

Sometimes, it’s the getting started that can seem impossible. Trawling through Pinterest, flicking through magazines and visiting endless home stores can all feel a little stressful.

One sure way to overcome this overwhelm is to work closely with an interior designer to help uncover your interior likes and dislikes. And then narrow the field of options for you, offering only samples that will work for your home and the style you’re after.

Plus, if you work with me, you’ll benefit from my bespoke furniture and soft furnishings service too. From bespoke seating to custom-made curtains as well as built-in storage that will help you maximise useable space.

Try an Inspire Session

If you’re considering investing in an interior designer, but would like to test the water before diving in, I’ve got the perfect option for you.

An Inspire Session is an opportunity to get tonnes of great ideas, that are tailored to suit your home and the problem areas you want to tackle. Direct from an experienced interior designer.

In the lead up to the session we’ll share a Pinterest Board and begin curating a selection of ideas, so I understand more about your style and the kind of things you’re considering. Then I’ll visit you at home so I can get a feel for the spaces you’re planning to renovate. Think of it as your own personalised design and planning workshop; a hot seat with an interiors expert. I’ll share concept ideas and advice and we can discuss practical solutions to any issues you might be struggling with, giving you plenty of inspiration and making sure we’re covering all the bases.

By the time we finish you’ll be feeling even more excited about your project. The ideas you’ve had in your head will really be starting to take shape and you’ll be well on your way to the beautiful home you’ve been dreaming of.

Prices start from £495 for a two-hour Inspire Session.
